World Heart Day is observed on September 29 every year when people across the globe actively participate in the world’s biggest intervention against cardiovascular diseases (CVD). World Heart Day was founded in 2000 to inform people around the globe that heart disease and stroke are the world’s leading causes of death, claiming 17.3 million lives each year.
Heart Day sends out the message that heart problems can be prevented. The aim is to improve globally by encouraging people to make lifestyle changes and promoting education internationally about ways to be good to your heart. The key agenda of World Heart Day is to create awareness that at least 80% of premature deaths from cardiovascular diseases (CVD) could be avoided if four main risk factors –tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and harmful use of alcohol are controlled. Besides,overeating, lack of exercise, unhealthy diets and high blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels are all factors which can trigger heart disease and threaten life.
The theme for World Heart Day 2015 is creating ‘heart-healthy environments’ which will shed light on creating healthy heart environments by ensuring that everyone has the chance to make healthy heart choices wherever they are. This day, is therefore devoted to encouraging an attitude that would focus on reducing our cardiovascular risk and promoting a heart-healthy planet for everyone around us.
However, we should not forego an evident fact that most individuals cannot make heart-healthy choices due to external environmental factors, such as the availability of healthy food or smoke-free zones.Individuals, organizations and nations have to cautiously take fruitful measures that would create heart-healthy environments, enabling everyone to make the right choices.
Thus, on this Heart Day, as responsible and socially aware citizens get involved, make a pledge to yourself as well as your heart to opt for heart-healthy choices for a healthier you.
